Updated in April 2026. The Brazilian passport is the document that opens the doors to the world — and one of the most powerful: with it, you can enter over 170 countries without a visa. But how to obtain it in 2026? How much does it cost? How long does it take? This guide covers everything, based on official information from the Federal Police.

How much does the Brazilian passport cost?
In April 2026, the cost of the regular passport is R$ 257.25. This amount includes the entire process (issuance, booklet, shipping to the unit).
In urgent cases, there is an extra fee of R$ 77.17 for issuance in 1 or 2 business days — but it must be proven to be urgent (work, study, or health).
Timeframe to receive the passport
The official timeframe is 6 to 10 business days after the in-person appointment. The document will be available for pickup at the same unit where the application was made, with a maximum period of 90 calendar days for pickup.
Step by step: how to apply
- Access the PF website: gov.br/pf/pt-br/assuntos/passaporte
- Fill out the online form with personal information
- Generate the GRU (Union Payment Guide) and pay the fee
- Schedule the in-person appointment at the nearest PF unit (in large cities, it can be complicated — schedule in advance)
- Attend the appointment on the scheduled date and time
- Wait for delivery (6-10 business days)
- Pick up the passport at the same unit

Required documents
Bring all the originals on the day of the appointment:
- Identity document: RG (issued within the last 10 years) or valid CNH
- Birth or marriage certificate (if parentage is not listed on the RG)
- Tax ID (CPF)
- Proof of payment for the GRU
- Certificate of discharge from military service (men aged 18 to 45)
- Voter registration + proof of voting in the last election (or certificate of electoral discharge)
- Previous passport (if applicable, for renewal)
For minors under 18 years
- Birth certificate (original)
- Identity document of the minor
- Document from both parents or guardians
- Authorization form signed by both
- Mandatory presence of the minor + one of the guardians
Biometric collection during the appointment
During the in-person appointment, the following are collected:
- Facial photo (the attendant will take it on the spot — do not bring a photo)
- Fingerprints (10 fingers)
- Digital signature
Dress discreetly (avoid white t-shirts, large print tops). The photo will remain in the passport for 10 years — it's worth taking a nice picture.
Passport validity
The Brazilian passport is valid for 10 years for individuals over 18 years old. For minors:
- 0-12 years: 5 years of validity
- 12-18 years: 10 years (but requires new authorization from parents)
Important: many countries require that the passport has at least 6 months of validity after the expected return date. Check before traveling.
